The Social Impact of Telecommunications

Telecommunication refers to communication via cable, telegraph, telephone, or broadcasting. It all started with a cable-connected phone and has progressed to wireless cell phones. Prior to the turn of the twentieth century, it was extremely difficult to communicate with loved ones who lived abroad or even in cities within the same country. On the other hand, communication with loved ones is now just a click away on mobile.

In addition to communication, the technological revolution benefits societies in terms of other factors related to facilitation and raising the living standards of communities and societies. These services are now as important to our survival as food. If something becomes so ingrained in people’s lives. As a result, public awareness campaigns must be conducted on a regular basis.

This year’s theme for UN Telecommunications and Information Society Day is “Digital Technologies for Older People and Healthy Aging.” This theme emphasizes the significance of using information and communication technologies to maintain one’s financial, physical, and emotional well-being.

On May 17, 1965, the International Telecommunication Union declared World Telecommunication Day at a conference in Antalya, Turkey. In response to the resolution, the United Nations General Assembly established World Information Society Day. On May 17, 2005, at the International Society World Summit in Tunis.

Because the dates of both events coincided, members unanimously agreed in Antalya at the International Plenipotentiary Conference to celebrate both as a combined event and raise awareness of these days every year after 2006.
